Weird, as I never considered myself a bird photographer. Maybe it was the acquisition of a 300/2.8 lens and a 2X tele converter that opened the door for the birder in me to get loose. All I can say is that now I see birds everywhere. In past lives, these things were just background and noise adders. Now I find it fun and challenging to get good photos of birds in the natural world. Sure East Africa was a start but now anticipating my return trips in 2013 and 2014 I am thinking about the amazing variety and number of birds in Tanzania. Just this week I went back thru my Tanzanian images to see what other birds I have photographed and to ID those species. I also remember the avian images I missed by not being ready or not paying attention.
What is nice about bird photography? For one, it is not necessary to travel to some exotic location to find birds, they are all around us. Sure, some of the exotic locations yield species unseen here in the USA but you will probably not exhaust the species count right here in a lifetime of shooting. I spent yesterday out shooting a specific area of Kansas and found that fully half of what I photographed turned out to be birds, birds on fences, birds on the ground, wading, clinging to blowing cattails or just circling overhead riding the waves of air coming off the ridges in the Smoky Hills.
Located just a few miles north of Canton, the refuge is home to a fairly substantial herd of bison and about 75 elk. The visitor center is open on Saturday mornings and by appointment. At the visitor center you can arrange for a tram ride out onto the refuge to get in the middle of the bison. During the fall thru winter months it is possible to see and photograph the elk as well. There is not a perfect season at Maxwell but I do have a favorite, Fall. The animals are more active, the grass colors are spectacular and the bull elk are vying for rights to mate with the cow elk.
For those who have not been there or shot in this situation, there are loads of questions. How close to the animals do we get? How long a lens do I need? How do I save my digital files in the field? Do I need to be in great shape for all the walking and any climbing we do? Is a good tripod needed? Let me try to explain what is involved.

During the time we are in the field, which equates to time among the wildlife, we are shooting out of a vehicle. These stretch vehicles have tops that open up to allow photographers to stand up and shoot. We limit the number of photographers in each vehicle so that if something happens on one side (as it usually does) we can all shoot on that side together without any pushing or crowding. Use of a tripod in the vehicle is next to impossible. Along the roof of the vehicle is a bar where we place bean bags to rest our cameras/lenses. This is sufficiently steady as long as people are not moving about. When shooting, we use a common courtesy approach, like asking if it is OK to move when others are shooting.

As far as physical conditioning, we rarely leave the vehicle except for meals and then ONLY when our driver/guides say it is safe.

For lenses, I find that the ideal lens is a 100-400 or 80-400. This range is really ideal for most of what you will shoot. There are times I want longer and I do have a 2X with me all the time that I can use for those situations. We also have people shooting with a 70-200/2.8 with a 2X or a 1.4X and this combination works very well. If your interest is in bird photography a 600mm might be a good choice but remember, you have to get it there and back and you have to carry it! Generally a 400mm lens on a crop frame body is an excellent choice for birds in Tanzania.

I also carry two camera bodies, using one as a primary and the other as a back up. It would be especially sad to get all the way to Tanzania and have your one camera quit on you. My suggestion, if you only have one camera body, would be to acquire a cheaper version of your camera line, like the bottom end Rebel in the Canon line or the equivalent in the Nikon series. These can usually be had for about $400, cheap insurance in my mind. I have several friends who shoot in Africa regularly with Canon Rebels and the top of the line lenses. They call these things "disposable digitals".

The animals in the parks are accustomed to vehicles and consider them a non-entity. There are a few species who will not let us get close but most are almost unaware of our presence. We have had lions get up out of the grass, wander over and lie in the shade of our vehicle.

This guy seemed content to have a shady spot to sleep. When we started the engine to drive off, he NEVER moved. The driver had to take extra care not to run over his TAIL!

Will we see the "Big Five"? That is a firm maybe. My first few trips, we hardly saw a leopard. Last trip, we saw 6, with 4 of them close enough to shoot with a 200mm lens. The wildlife is plentiful, the roads are not crowded and we will be out EVERY day, ALL DAY! There is a point about 4 days into the trip that you might actually tire of seeing zebra and wildebeest! Sounds crazy but it could happen. While on the subject of the wildlife, I have to keep reminding those on their first photo safari to East Africa to also shoot scenery. There landscapes are nothing short of amazing and your friends back home will want to know what it looks like in Serengeti and the other parks we will visit.

Field storage is an interesting issue. There are basically three options:

Carry a laptop and sufficient hard drive space to store your images

Carry a portable storage device (Epson, etc.)

Carry a bunch of storage cards and take them home to download

We will have power at all the lodges and camps so no matter what you do, there is a way to get it done.

Batteries can be an issue if you don't have spares. We tend to carry an extra set or maybe two of the rechargeable camera batteries. You can charge them in your room/tent or if you have a 12V charger, the vehicles have 12V outlets arranged around the interior.

Tripods are really not needed unless you want to sue them at the lodges and camps. If you know the others traveling in the group, you can sometimes share a tripod. Weight restrictions are somewhat prohibitive especially on regional flights in Tanzania. A small tripod can come in handy for star shots. Talk about dark skies! Lights and electricity are hard to find in most of Serengeti.

This is a night shot of the skies in Loliondo at one of the "camps" where we will be in 2013. We had one tripod in the group and took turns using it.

There are a few things to keep in mind.

The wider lens you use the longer your exposure scan be without showing any appreciable movement of the stars. I prefer something about 28mm or wider on a full frame camera such as my 5D Mark II.

BEFORE it gets dark, focus on something far away to get your lens set to "Infinity". Turn off autofocus and then use a small piece of duct tape (gaffers tape) to fix the focus at that setting.

Set you camera to long exposure noise reduction. When you take a long exposure, the sensor in your digital camera gets warm and generates noise. Once you close the shutter, the camera will make a second "exposure" without opening the shutter. This builds up another image of just the noise which is then subtracted from the first image. If you are taking a 60 second exposure, your camera will be tied up for two minutes. Get over it.

USE A ROCK SOLID TRIPOD AND A CABLE RELEASE! Caps to drive this point home.

Take off the lens hood. Wind will affect the set up more with that "sail" sticking out in front of the lens.

Make sure your batteries are fresh and have a spare set along fully charged and ready to go. Long exposures eat batteries!

Here are some samples images from the last year or so.

BASIC GUIDELINES:

Exposure should be about 60-90 seconds at ISO 3200

Lens set at f/2.8 unless your lens will not open that much. At f/4 you will need a higher ISO or a longer exposure.

NO LIGHTS! If you are shooting with others make sure everyone turns their LCD illumination down as low as it will go. If you have a group, spread out. You don't want your light to ruin someone else's image and you don't want theirs ruining yours.

Dark skies are a must. No moonlight. Pick a night when there is a new moon or close to it. Nearby towns and farms with yard lights WILL show up. You might not see them with your eyes but the long exposures will certainly enhance them.

Try lighting foreground objects with small LED flashlights. You don't need much illumination. You will need to experiment with this to know how much is just right.

Shoot RAW if you can. This lets you make large adjustments as needed including white balance.

Decided this was the day to run out there. the time of day was ideal but close. Started a little late and spent a few extra minutes in Capitol Reef, a good excuse for not being optimal in the lighting situation. Goblin Valley is just off the highway between Green River and Capitol Reef NP. I short 15 minute drive and I was sitting at an overlook seeing literally hundreds (ok, maybe thousands) of mounds capped with dome of rock. Looking like a HUGE field of mushrooms, the park is just downright fun to walkabout and explore.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652008037378189246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091761470937694386.post-88351603078659248052011-04-21T14:26:00.001-05:002011-04-21T14:27:51.309-05:00Away For AwhileI almost forgot I had this blog so I need to get back on it soon. If you are at all interested in making a photo safari to this fabulous country please send me an e-mail asking to be added to the mailing list. I know that several people have already asked to be added to the list. I expect to have things ready to send out in about 6 to 8 weeks. I am also posting information on my web site at http://selective-focus.com along with some information about the areas we will be visiting. I have made every effort to keep the costs reasonable while still making this a photo safari with fewer people per vehicle and the same excellent guides and drivers we have always had on these trips. We will be using Unique Safaris, wholly owned and operated out of Tanzania. The trip will start in late May 2011 and we will return to the US in early June. There are many photos from previous trips available online at Flickr.

Hope to see you onboard this great trip!

Jim & Cindy Griggs
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652008037378189246noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091761470937694386.post-26573663131983101752009-12-31T14:20:00.004-06:002009-12-31T14:22:43.375-06:00Store in the Flint Hills
Interesting little store in the Flint Hills. She lives across the street and walks across to open the store with her walker which is in the photo near the steps. Amazingly, she is legally blind or at least close to it. We stopped in to buy a soft drink and package of chips/pretzels. I try to stop every time I drive passed the store and it is open. My total was $1.65 and I handed her a $5. She held it up to her glasses and asked what it was. I told her a $5 and she said, "OK" and counted out change. I am told that local residents and people that she knows make their own change. Not telling exactly where this is because some idiot will want to go rob this poor woman who is on her own and spritely! This morning found the buffalo along the roadway and close enough for some nice images. I must have shot 8 gigs worth of shots that morning. Several were just excellent and this one turned out OK as well. I read a post by Clark Crenshaw about a technique he used overlaying a B&W version with lowered opacity. I will try that with this image and post it soon.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652008037378189246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091761470937694386.post-85273797996727341672009-12-12T16:40:00.001-06:002009-12-12T16:42:40.850-06:00Could not resist cropping this as a panorama. I was almost 4 years old. It was an exciting time to be boarding a train. I don't remember much but I remember the seats, the window and getting to travel all night. OK, maybe I was asleep for a lot of it, but it is still a memory I can recall. The year would have been 1950. My brother was not around yet but was "in the hanger" which is very appropriate since he became a pilot eventually. I always drive by the station when I am in Shawnee just to see what photo ops exist and every time it is cloudy or dreary. Thanksgiving day was EXCELLENT! Required a delay before lunch so that I could get out and walk around this fine bit of architecture and history. It is now a museum and warrants a return visit to see the inside, not that I remember anything about the old depot, but somehow I want to see that part of history. Having traveled in Europe by train, this station has none of the size and grandeur of some of their stations but then most of the ones in Europe I visited were new, the old ones demolished in conflicts.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652008037378189246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091761470937694386.post-18397587604358609002009-11-22T19:14:00.003-06:002009-11-22T19:30:53.553-06:00Photographers in the Mist

Just completed the annual meeting of the Great Plains Nature Photographers here in Kansas. Attendance was almost 140. Our featured speaker this year was none other than world renowned conservation writer and photographer, Boyd Norton. Excellent programs were presented about his work and the history of saving places both wild and beautiful all over the world. We also had a very interesting presentation by Gene Worsley of MPIX concerning color and color space.

I have been a friend of Boyd's since 1981. he and his wife, Barb, drove in from Denver on Thursday and spent the weekend at our place in McPherson. Great evenings of wine/beer/food and conversation. To make the weekend even that more special for me we also had Keith Schwamkrug (an excellent photographer and teacher of Photoshop) here along with great friend Allen Crenshaw (I worked for Allen in his studio in Denison, TX back in the 70's) and his brother Clark Crenshaw (a fine art photographer from Dallas, TX). WOW! Could not have been better for me in any way.

On Friday we drove out early to Maxwell Wildlife Refuge near Canton, KS. The goal was to photograph bison and elk on the refuge. The fog was so thick we were not sure we would even see any much less get chances to shoot images. Refuge worker and wildlife expert, Owen, took us out on the range in the refuge pick up. Within 10 minutes he had us in the middle of a herd of Bison. Owen apologized for not having sunny skies little knowing at the time that we were delighted to have the fog, a nice change for the type of images we were seeking. After 45 minutes with the Bison we left in search of the Elk. Again, Owen had us in great shooting range within just a few minutes. The elk, all big bulls, were spread across a hilltop with a row of leafless cottonwood trees faded into the foggy background. WOW! Excellent shooting again!

The photographers in the truck are left to right: Boyd Norton (www.wildernessphotography.com); Clark Crenshaw (www.clarkcrenshawphotography.com) and Duane Graham, my great friend from Hesston, KS and a shooting companion on many trips! My brother is staying in town but his family has gone back to Goddard, KS.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652008037378189246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091761470937694386.post-36768456596788496802009-08-22T10:09:00.002-05:002009-08-22T10:23:15.362-05:00Original 7When I was a senior in high school back in 1964/65 I had the opportunity to spend a Saturday with the 7 original NASA astronauts. WOW! That was inspiring and awesome. My favorite was Wally Schirra. Little did I know that 12 years later he would be the VP of Marketing for Johns-Manville. I was a productin manager at our plant in Texas. I met him in my boss' office during a trip from a plant in Texas to HQ in Denver. My boss asked if we had met and I said, "No, not really." Wally blurted out, "Didn't we meet in Texas a few years ago? You were in high school and on a tour?" I was floored. No wonder he was an astronaut and I was just a production manager in a pipe plant! These guys were gutsy, full of life and adventure, ready for whatever was thrown at them. I wanted to go into flying and maybe into the space program but being 6-1 and 185 pounds made that impossible so I went to Engineering School so I could design things that were exciting, like rockets maybe. Did work on some weird science stuff like terrain following radar and laser guided bombs. This was back in the late 60's and early 70's. Had a secret clearance and had a blast working on conceptual ideas and prototypes but that soon faded and I got out of that business.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652008037378189246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091761470937694386.post-37728636626749489942009-07-26T15:29:00.003-05:002009-07-26T15:33:08.323-05:00Welcome - Oslo Ryder GeggThursday we were joined by our fourth grandchild, Oslo Ryder Gegg. Oslo is in keeping with the capitol theme, joining his sister Olympia. At 9 pounds 5 ounces he came in as about half grown already! We got online with them on Skype last night in dad's room. The little guy brought a big smile to his face except dad was upset that Oslo has more hair then he does.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652008037378189246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091761470937694386.post-26476277482303679242009-07-22T19:10:00.002-05:002009-07-22T19:14:33.433-05:00Interview Releasedhttp://www.fly2houston.com/hasVideo

Not sure how long the link will be up but this is a video about the 40th anniversary of the Houston Intercontinental Airport. It just so happens that the airport opened on the day we got married AND my dad worked the first shift that the new airport was opened, starting at midnight on 6/8/1969. He came home from work in the morning, slept a little then got dressed and was at the church for our wedding. Our little portion of the video is short and near the very end if you have the patience to wait for it to show up. There is also a quick shot of dad sitting in the cockpit of a 727 at the new airport.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652008037378189246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091761470937694386.post-12645516187271162852009-07-22T11:17:00.002-05:002009-07-22T11:22:50.173-05:00A Week of Ups and Downs, but mostly DownsLast Friday we lost our dog of 13 years, Ranger. Dad was fairly well upset about it as this dog was very special to him as well as us. Dad, at 92, has been having some difficulty breathing the last few weeks. We took him to the ER last night and he has been in the ICU portion of our local hospital since then. We were here with him until late last night and back again this morning. I am staying in his room. Cindy went home to pack. She is on call to go to our daughters house to take care of our 5 year old grand daughter. Jenny is 8.999 months pregnant and will need someone there to help for a few days. We are sharing duties here and I need to be here with dad. We have our fingers crossed that dad gets better and can come home soon.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652008037378189246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091761470937694386.post-76211708807135008622009-07-22T06:29:00.003-05:002009-07-22T06:36:36.426-05:00Ranger and ColetOur daughter has a cat that got along OK with Ranger. It was not a matter of him getting close to her. She had to let him get close. One year Colet, the cat, sent Ranger a Christmas present of his own to open. When Ranger had finished passing out the presents that morning, we told him this one was for Ranger. His eyes lit up and he tore into the package like a three year old kid. When he had the small football out he tossed it around a few times then brought it to me to throw for him. I tossed it into the air so he could catch it.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652008037378189246noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091761470937694386.post-58830305436793362172009-07-21T22:48:00.002-05:002009-07-21T22:53:09.224-05:00More RangerThis time a video of his favorite "trick"; well not so much of a trick as a service to mankind:

Ranger was really proud of this one. It took a total of 6 takes to get this final version that was edited down from all the different shots. He waited patiently while I set up each shot. The amazing thing is it took no more than 5 minutes to teach him to do this and he was always ready go get one for us!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15652008037378189246noreply@blogger.com0
